While solar, wind and fuel cell technologies have promised environmentally friendly and energy efficient power generation solutions for businesses and consumers. However, the high cost of installing such solutions has stifled the mass adoption of such technologies, regardless of the available rebates and subsidies.
What are Thermo Electricity Generators?
There is an alternative to wind, solar and fuel cell power generation that DIY enthusiasts have been using for a couple of years now. TEGs (Thermoelectric Generators) work on the Seebeck effect, otherwise referred to as the Thomson or Peltier effects. In essence, the Seebeck effect says that if there is a significant temperature difference on either side of metallic surfaces that are separated by pairs of p-type and n-type semiconductor materials, a current will flow from the device. See figure 1.
Thermo electric generators are just as reliable as other kinds of power generation methods, such as combustion engine powered electricity, especially considering the fact that thy have no moving parts to wear out. An array of TEGs are able to produce enough electricity to power appliances and other electrical devices such as air conditioners, providing that there are reliable heating and cooling sources available.
