People armed with automobiles kill each other and animals, poison the environment, and wipe out the neighborliness of their communities as they drive past the mom-and-pop store on their way to the Wal-Mart or KFC.
Those of us who live in cities and crowded suburbs only know what life before cars was like by watching movies or reading grandma’s memoir. If you live in the country or in a small town, everything you need may still be within walking distance. Your Main Street may be crowded with people instead of the noisy, stinking vehicles we big city folks must endure.
Of course, it will never be illegal to purchase, own, or drive a licensed automobile. Nor is it logical, or even rational, to debate such legislation. But when you consider the annual cost in lives and money and to the environment, it makes good sense to consider alternatives to climbing behind the wheel this evening.
