On Saturday night of the Chicago Blues Festival, Buddy Guy stood at the sales counter of his brand new nightclub putting autographs on hats and shirts. Each recipient beamed during the encounter and invariably related their personal introduction to Buddy's music. The guitar great in response was laconic but courteous, an attitude reflective of his odyssey in blues music.
For twelve years festival attendees and frequenters of Buddy Guy's Legends were reminded that the property of the South Loop location had been donated by its owner to Columbia College. In the time between the '09 and '10 festivals, a one block move north occurred and the new club is a transition both reminiscent and improved.
Legends has become non-smoking and its air conditioning is better able to deal with the crush of patrons moving to the music in ever tightening space. The upstairs overflow is a museum of memorabilia with bar, pool tables, wide screens of the action downstairs, and quality sound to match the new system below.
