Since Twitter began five years ago it has battled fake or "bot" accounts that spread spam and malware using an automated system. Fake accounts have changed shape during this time, but the use of computers to operate Twitter accounts is becoming more widely accepted. Twitter acknowledges this in its rules and best practices and discourages aggressive following, but many companies have found a balance that seems to make everyone happy.
Human, Computer, and Cyborg Tweets
A recent study at the College of William and Mary breaks down data for three different types of Twitter accounts: human, computer, and cyborg. A computer or bot account is maintained by an automated program that sends and replies to tweets. A cyborg account uses the same method, but the program is maintained by a person who can reply with a personal message when necessary. One interesting use of the cyborg account is @AI-AGW, an account created by Nigel Leck to stir interest in human-based climate change. Because it is clearly marked as a cyborg account, @AI-AGW keeps the transparency that users crave while generating a large following.
