Though abstinence from sex is the most effective way to prevent unwanted pregnancy or the occurrence of sexually transmitted diseases, the correct and consistent use of male latex condoms will significantly reduce the likelihood that either of these events will take place. One must realize, however, that male latex condoms prevent some diseases more than others (Center for Young Women’s Health, 2009).
Blood and Body Fluids
Condoms are most effective in the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases which spread via blood and body fluids. This includes human immunodeficiency virus, gonorrhea, hepatitis A and B, trichomoniasis, chlamydia, and others. One reason for this better protection is that condoms will retain semen and fluids from the man and make a barrier between the two sexual partners.
